Curriculum Choices for 2011 - 2012

Ok so I love to read and research and shop... Guess what was made for me? Homeschool curriculums! After much (read 150 hours) of research and lots of purchasing - changing my mind and purchasing again... We have chosen our curriculum. Some of you may wonder well, what in the heck have you been using this whole time? A little bit of everything combined with alot of read alouds. Part of my research was trying out different styles/formats on him and on myself for that matter.

Religion - Faith & Life for Grade 1, Saints for Everyday, the Bible along with a Bible timeline

Math - Saxon Math 1, though I have already purchased 2 because we are going so fast through this. We also have a "daily book" that has all the calendar stuff, 100's chart, moon phases, weather graph, temperature chart, etc.

Social Studies - Character Building Cards, Adventures in America, Catholic History in the Americas, Map Skills Book A

Science - Elemental Science's Intro to Science, Behold & See 1, Homeschool Science Lab at AUM once a week

Language Arts - Expode the Code, Bob Books, First Language Lessons, Little Stories for Little Folks, Handwriting Without Tear Cursive

PE - this is still a little bit of a work in progress. Free play obviously... And several other things that combine together. Like - United Gymstars - weekly class; ice skating - weekly class; soccer - weekly class and games.

Art - CHC Art Pac 1, Liturgical Masterpieces, Come Look With Me Series, misc. craft projects that go along with our history or reading, etc. and Fun Friday Art Class once a month.

Music - Making Music Praying Twice, Great Composers Series, Music Maestro CD collection. (so far the boy is a huge Bach fan)

Sanish - La Clase Divertida - Level 1

Poetry - read-alouds and memorization of a poem each week to recite on Friday

Whew - what a list. It seems a little wild huh and like how are you ever gonna get that done and I can hear some of you, Michelle he is only 6... blah blah blah. So let me ease your mind a little - science, history and all the enrichments are not each done everyday. Everyday classes are religion, language arts and math. The others are added in for 1 - 3 days per week. And not counting just cuddle read aloud time our school time is about 2 & 1/2 hours per day. And we don't do that straight through - lots of breaks!!!

We also have a full schedule of field trips and clubs. Last week we went to our first science club meeting and learned about the life cycle of a mosquito and came home with larvae and a life cycle chart. There are MANY homeschool activities in Montgomery and we plan to utilize them. You'll hear more about these different things as the year progresses.

Gotta go - time to leave for Art class :-)
